OAK RIDGE — Blasting in preparation for installing sewer lines in the new Westcott Center — the name for the new Kroger Marketplace retail center at the intersection of Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike — will begin Monday and continue for two or three weeks, said city official Cindi Gordon.

Demolition of houses and commercial buildings on the site has begun.

Blasting will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, officials said. A survey of expected effects from blasting was conducted, and “no collateral damage has been predicted,” according to a news release from the city. The explosions, however, are likely to be heard and felt in the immediate area.

There may be some brief road closures in certain instances depending on the blast locations, officials said.

Blasting will be paused after the initial work, Gordon said, and then resume in late September.

Residents and motorists are advised that it won’t be necessary to contact emergency dispatching services during the blasting “unless an emergency has occurred.”

More information is available on the city’s website or by contacting Gordon at 865-425-3559.
